October 2010

Strange noises, strange smells, shadow figures and unexplained happenings… You have determined that you are sharing your home with uninvited, other-worldly guests but how did they get there? More importantly, what can you do about them?

First, to understand anything considered paranormal or even spiritual you must have a basic understanding of energy. It is the attraction, accumulation and stagnation of low-level energy or vibes which attract and hold lower vibrational spirits or entities. Consequently, it is the attraction, accumulation and flow of positive or higher vibrational energy which will be your tool in giving them the boot.

The only thing to fear is fear

Everything is energy; in this case we are talking about emotional energy. When those ghoulies go passing through town they do not see the pink house and the green house, they see the emotional energy within the house. Any energetic vibration that strikes a chord with their own vibrational field will pull them in.

Negative energy is heavier than positive, you know this to be true because when you are depressed or angry you feel heavy and when you are happy you feel lighter. This dense, dark energy tends to coagulate. It loves closed in spaces and clutter. It loves angry words and violent movies. When spirits or entities find a delicious pocket of negative energy they accept your invitation to feed from it and play with it.

Your intent creates your experience; this is the most important lesson

Like any dank, musty space energetic coagulations need to be aired out. The energetic flow needs to be opened up. We need to raise the vibration or, in other words, turn up the lights. Acknowledging the darkness or negativity is the first start. Once you know how you are contributing to the negative you can adjust your habits and your thoughts. There are tools to use for raising the vibration of the house, but in the end it will be the conscious knowledge of yourself and your self-governing which will maintain a healthy home.

You are bigger than you think you are

You have a direct connection to the divine. That is not a religious statement, it is simply fact. Whatever you choose to call the animated energy in all things (Life Force, Creation, God, Goddess, All That Is, Allah, Great Spirit…) we are all part of it. My favorite visual prompt for this is to think of an ocean. The water evaporates, becomes rain or snow, and eventually returns to the source. Each rain drop might be seen as separate but all water is connected. It is only our human illusion which sees ourselves as separate from all other life and therefore separate from The Source or God.

Once we understand that there is absolutely no way to be separate from this creative life force we “pump up the jam” so to speak—turn up our vibration. Now, the energy we have to work with is no longer “our” energy, it is life force energy. This is how “healers” heal; it is “God” flowing through. When you ground yourself, which is bringing your focused attention  to this one moment as in a “be here now” experience, and open your heart to that connection with that life force energy your energy field becomes brighter and bigger.

Clearing the way

Now we are ready to talk about exorcism or house clearing but first a word of warning. These “others” can not hurt you unless you allow them to. This is a true statement but what does it mean? It means that disembodied spirits or entities do not have the ability to “create” but they can manipulate. If you have any doubts or fears about your safety, your ability to control the situation, your effectiveness with the clearing or your authority to order them out chances are you will not be happy with the results. This is why, in extreme situations such as poltergeist activities, it is best to call in an expert.

Now, when I say “expert” I do not mean “ghost hunter”. Remember our discussion of negativity? Your home will not be cleared of negative energy by a bunch of people trying to muscle down their own fear as they run around chasing ghosts with electrical recording devices and shouting taunts. An expert would be someone who has been trained in holding their divine space with absolute conviction. An expert has experience in discerning their own thoughts from the thoughts of others. And, an expert has practice with the movement of energy, sensing it, seeing it and re-energizing a space. When the negative energy is moved out a void is left behind and must be consciously filled. Choose an expert according to your own belief system and comfort level. Shaman, Priest, Medium, etc… Just be sure you check references and practice common sense; there are many frauds out there.

The actual clearing is simple in theory; the maintained focus is the difficult part. Basically, you should have several adults gathered who understand how to ground themselves and maintain focus. Once all parties feel they are ready, combine your energies to work as one unit.

One person will be the voice and leader. Your actual ceremony may vary depending on your belief system but most will begin with some kind of guided meditation or visualization where the group unites energies and calls in guides, angels, ancestors, etc… to assist the party. Once the strength of unity is accomplished the party moves through the house telling the “others” to leave and reinforcing positive energy through tools such as incense; song, toning or chant; drumming, singing bowls, etc… Each room is blessed, each doorway and window sealed.

The tools

Remember our talk about vibration. Everything carries a vibration or energy imprint. Different incense carry different energies; the clearing plants and resins include white sage, sweet grass, nag champa, dragon’s blood (a resin) and copal. Plants and resins which raise vibration include frankincense, sandalwood, pinon, cedar and rose.

Sounds which raise vibration include the OM, which is said to be foundational sound of creation; pure sounds that correlate with our chakras which can be achieved with tuning forks or singing bowls; or drumming as long as the focused intent is in connecting to the divine.

Crystals also have vibration. A good reference book for crystals is Love Is in the Earth: A Kaleidoscope of Crystals by Melody.  Briefly, amethyst raises spiritual energy and is easy to work with. Quartz only amplifies energy so if you use it make sure you pair it with another crystal such as amethyst. Rose quartz is very healing but is softer and works better on people than in spaces.

Maintaining your healthy home

Through developing sensitivity for energies and making conscious choices you can maintain a vibrationally healthy home. There are many tools at your disposal, a bit of fun research into what feels right for you and your family is all you need to create and maintain an energetically balanced space.

Here are a few places to start:

To learn to recognize energy, discern the flow of energy and raise energy you might enjoy Carolyn Myss (http://www.myss.com/). I recommend beginning with her DVD on The Energetics of Healing.

To learn about the various intuitive gifts and how to nurture them I recommend Caron Goode’s book Raising Intuitive Children (http://intuitiveparenting.wordpress.com/). You don’t need to have children to enjoy this book; think of it as raising your intuitive inner child.

Caron’s other book, Kids Who See Ghosts, is a nationwide bestseller. This one is a guide for parents wondering if their ghost-sensing children are normal and how to deal with them in a knowledgeable and compassionate way.

That concludes my series of posts on ghosts, hauntings, and reclaiming your space. You may agree with me or disagree, either way is fine. I invite you to leave a comment or share your experience—there is still time to enter the random drawing.

Happy Halloween, Merry Samhain and Blessed All Souls Day!

In my last post I mentioned that some people living in “haunted houses” adjust to the situation by viewing the “uninvited” as guests or extended family. They laugh off or boast about the situation and in essence they befriend the ghost– after all, it works in the movies, right? Hey, I grew up with Casper too so grab a Coke and a smile and let’s talk.

If It Looks Like Grandma and Smells Like Grandma—It May Not Be Grandma

Goodbyes are painful. When all we have left are the memories it is comforting to think a departed loved one will come to visit from time to time, and quite often they do. In times of emotional distress it is not uncommon to will feel their supportive presence. But our loved ones don’t stay for long—and they won’t be doing anything to frighten us. So, if you think a loved one has “moved in” and is trying to get your attention by slamming doors and turning electrical devises on and off think again; it is most likely an imposter.

Discarnate spirits, bad energies or other entities looking for opportunity will fill-in wherever they can. In case you are wondering how “they” know what grandma smelled like… There is a level upon which all our thoughts and feelings are transparent. It is our illusions as humans that lead us to believe our thoughts are contained within the flesh. Not so, they are riding around in the ether and can be tuned into like a radio wave.

When Good Ghouls Go Mad

Active spirits have a limited reasoning capacity. They tend to be temperamental and territorial—and they’re sneaky. As long as you are playing by their rules they stay low. Challenge the status quo, however, and watch out!

Someone I am very close to lives under haunted circumstances. For years the family dealt with apparitions, toys turning on and off (all of them…at the same time) and voices in the basement. They called in one of the better known ghost hunting troops thinking it would be cool to have all the activity verified. Well, it upset the “others” and ever since the ghost hunters’ visit things have been really bad.

What’s bad? Even I don’t know everything that has happened; they don’t like to talk about it. I do know that they have more than one visitor. I know that the woman was home alone one day and heard noises in the kitchen. She went to investigate and saw pans being thrown and broken dishes on the floor. Then, one day the youngest boy was in his room yelling for help. Something had moved his dresser in front of the door, barricading the child in the room. The boy could not move the dresser and was freaking out.

The family finally called in a shaman to cleanse and bless the house. The shaman ended up in the hospital and the family is in the process of moving. Upon reflection the family has realized that not only did they have these poltergeist activities but that some members of the family have been under “oppression”—their thoughts and activities influenced by the spirits. This kind of manipulation can be a subtle as being depressed or exhausted for no reason or having unprovoked violent thoughts to the altering of the person’s physical appearance and actual changes in behavior.

United We Stand

The first step toward clearing your home is to support each other. There are probably only a few members of your family experiencing strange phenomena. Just because not everyone can see it doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. Your united, heartfelt, “we are in this together” attitude will be your greatest weapon. Take the family away from the house and have a long, open-minded discussion. Let each person describe their experiences without judgment. Now, with the topic no longer taboo and each individual feeling supported your family will be able to deal with the situation.

Still to come… What attracts “ghosts” and how to un-invite them.

Virginia Cemetary at NightHalloween is fast approaching and with it would-be ghost hunters are on the prowl. It is said that upwards of 70% of all Americans believe in the paranormal, in fact, according to a Gallup Poll taken in 2005 three out of 4 people believe in the paranormal and I am tempted to bet that the number has increased since then. The popularity of shows such as John Edward, TAPS, The Ghost Whisperer and The Sixth Sense dragged what was once considered taboo right out of the closet and into everyday conversation.

If your only knowledge of the paranormal has been via John Edward or The Ghost Whisperer listen up—when uninvited guests go bump in the night they are usually nowhere near ready to cross over.  In fact, they may not be confused dead people at all—they may be disembodied ne’er doers.

If they aren’t your long-lost Aunt Pearl and Uncle Charlie then who are they and why are they bothering you? First, it helps to begin referring to “them” as “energies” and not “spirits”. Energy is all around us. It is measurable on a scale and just as there is light and dark there is positive and negative. Think vibes—some places and people have good vibes, some bad. Just as people want to socialize with like-minded people, energy seeks a similar frequency (or one it can feed from) and builds.

Now, some people think it would be cool to live in a haunted house. Some people who do live in haunted places try to make do by telling themselves they are with “extended family”. But when the “others” begin influencing loved one’s behaviors, frightening children or being physically abusive it can turn bad quickly.

The next several posts will look at what attracts these energies or entities and how to get rid of them. I will share my own experiences and you can share yours. I will point the way towards some sources and experts, explain how to have a vibrationally healthy house. My aim is to give you enough information that you can recognize a problem and deal with it coming from a place of confidence and clarity.

“Nevermore”

RC 2010

The house next door to us has been vacant for awhile now. I’ve become accustomed to not having to worry about closing the blinds at night even if I happen to be wearing…well, not much.

As I was passing through the living room a few nights ago I caught a glimpse of someone walking down the pathway on the side of our house. Startled, I jumped back behind a doorway because this was one of those times I was wearing “not much”.

My partner, noticing my odd behavior, gave me a quizzical look. I mentioned that I saw someone in our yard. I went on to describe a short statured male with light-colored hair.

“Sigh, I was hoping you wouldn’t notice,” he said. “There’s been a traveler checking out the place next door for the past week or so; I just haven’t had the energy to deal with him yet.”

I knew then that he had understood—we weren’t talking about a person.

Do you have an unsettling story to share…something spooky? Perhaps you have a favorite Halloween memory… Share your story with us!

Slave TradeAs Columbus Day approaches I remember a conversation I had with my brother last spring. His daughter’s friend was studying to become a teacher and was having some difficulty digesting a new view of history. Gone were the fluffy stories of happily shared dinners with the natives and explorers bringing order to chaos. She was now learning the horrible truth behind the children’s tales. Brother was upset. How could “they” drag our heroes through the mire like that?

I was stunned; I still am, actually. I would hope that at University level the girl would be mature enough to handle the truth. If one is studying history, wouldn’t they want to learn the true history (or as close to the truth as we can get)? I’ve always felt that the point to studying history is to learn more about where we come from, what works and what doesn’t. We can’t change history but we can change the future and learning from the mistakes of the past helps us to do that.  What benefit is there in lying about historical events? How can we learn from false history? How can we better ourselves if we can’t face our mistakes?

The world is rife with bloody tales. Not one war ever waged nor one civilization ever conquered has been without serious insult to humanity. Genocide, rape, pillage, slavery… are always part of the deal. This holds true not only for our past history but for the history we make today; whether in the name of exploration, in the name of the church or in the name of peace— to conquer means just that. As far as I know, no culture has been spared.

Perhaps it is time to reassess who we consider a hero or what we consider righteous. While we are at it, maybe we can finally accept that the past has been ugly and instead of blaming each other, (since we weren’t there at the time anyway), and thinking that “our people” are the only ones who have been wronged; realize that all of our ancestors have suffered indignities and that we hold the key to a better world.

Have you ever “frisbeed” a pie?

I was in my early twenties and newly married when I received the call from my husband; so-and-so is having a birthday here at work, could you make a pie…for tomorrow.

In a Betty-Crocker moment I was peeling apples and mixing dough.  The dough, however, was not in the mood to be baked that day. It resisted and split while I floured and rolled. Finally, frustration hit in one fired-up moment; energy moved up my body, down my arm and the Pyrex pie dish with the obstinate dough went sailing across the room.

I picked up the phone and called my husband, “You are not getting your pie for tomorrow and we are going out to dinner.”

The Betty-Crocker tip here is to always keep your flour in an airtight container and date it. Don’t use old flour.
